An Engaging Network of Youths Championing Sustainable Development (ESD) across the Globe
To inspire, inform, motivate and empower youths to create sustainable communities around them. WSCSD's mission is three fold:
- Explore sustainability on campus and beyond
- Engage in creating positive eco-social change
- Empower a network of student innovators and entrepreneurs focused on community solutions and sustainability.
01History of WSCSD
The earliest steps towards formation of an international student platform for the advancement of sustainability were made between the year 2000 and 2001. This was during the Youth Encounter for Sustainability (YES) Course in Braunwald, Switzerland (2000 & 2001) and Alliance for Global Sustainability (AGS) Annual Meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland (2001). In taking these steps the students were ‘looking for a means of translating their collective will to take action into realizing sustainability, through collaboration’.
02 WSCSD in Kenya
WSCSD-Kenya is the local chapter of the global WSCSD network that is aimed at mainstreaming sustainability ideals in Kenya. The network has evolved from Students for Global Sustainability - University of Nairobi (SfGS-UoN), a single student community formed in 2006 at the University of Nairobi (UoN) to an autonomous society, officially registered in accordance with the Kenyan laws in 2013. Borrowing from the global network, WSCSD-Kenya’s membership is comprised of individual students and student groups from various universities and colleges in Kenya. Our goal is to facilitate Kenyan university students and university communities to become change agents and to act in order to address the multi-faceted sustainability challenges facing Kenya. This is a pre-requisite for the achievement of Kenya’ development blueprint – Vision 2030, and contribution to the attainment of global Sustainable Development Goals and the related Green Economy. Currently we boast membership in over 20 universities in Kenya.
